Company Information

  Lawrence T. Kirwan Sr.,

Founder

Lawrence T. Kirwan, Sr., a graduate of Boston Technical High School, who went on to Northeastern University, had a keen interest in mechanical engineering.  That interest brought him to Codman & Shurtleff, Inc., a manufacturer of general and specialty surgical instruments and equipment.  After 29 years at Codman, Mr. Kirwan decided to start his own company.

In November of 1979, New England Surgical Instruments was started by Lawrence T. Kirwan Sr., and his wife, Jean. New England Surgical Instruments manufactured surgical instruments for microsurgical specialties such as neurosurgery, ophthalmology, and ear, nose and throat.  Initially, the company was run from the basement of Mr. & Mrs. Kirwan’s home in Duxbury, Massachusetts.  After a year of having employees coming in and out of their house, the Kirwans decided it was time to move to a bigger facility.

In 1980, New England Surgical Instruments moved to an old shoe factory in Rockland, Massachusetts.  It was there, in 1989, that New England Surgical Instruments became Kirwan Surgical Products, Inc.  The new name helped the company distinguish itself from others, and emphasize that Kirwan is a family owned and operated business.

Kirwan Surgical Products continued its success and growth.  Seventeen years and many more employees later, Kirwan outgrew the Rockland facility as well.

After many years of renting space at the Rockland, Massachusetts, headquarters, the Kirwans built their own 30,000 square foot custom designed manufacturing facility in the seaside town of Marshfield, Massachusetts.  Sadly, Lawrence T. Kirwan Sr. passed away before he could see his magnificent facility come to completion.

And, Kirwan continues to grow.  Construction was completed in the Fall of 2002 expanding the facility by 20,000 square feet, bringing Kirwan's headquarters to 50,000 square feet.
